November marks the start of tree planting season as conditions are at their best to ensure the success of new trees from now until March. To mark the commencement of this year’s planting season, members of our management team visited a Meadfleet managed development close to our head office to plant 105 trees that were kindly donated by The Woodland Trust.
These trees will grow and provide additional wildlife habitat on the development and will also act as a ‘wildlife highway’ between two existing mature habitats which are already present on the open space.
The trees that were planted class as ‘working wood’ and the species included are:
Trees play a large part in minimising climate change, as they absorb the CO2 in the environment, store the carbon, and release oxygen in the atmosphere. A fully mature tree can absorb 25kg of carbon a year, which may not sound like much but once these 105 trees are mature they will absorb 2.6 tonnes a year!!
A huge thank you to The Woodland Trust, who have provided 400 trees for planting across Meadfleet open spaces this month as part of their Free trees for schools and communities campaign. As open space managers, we are continually seeking to enhance the areas in our care for the benefit of biodiversity and residents. Projects such as this are a great way of improving green spaces at no additional cost to our customers and allow us to engage with residents by providing them with the opportunity to join in with the planting.
