Recently our Ecology and Conservation Manager Paul gave a talk on his work at Meadfleet to Royston Wildlife Group. The illustrated talk, detailing the work undertaken by Meadfleet to enhance biodiversity across the land in its portfolio, was held at Royston Town Hall, Hertfordshire.
The talk was very well attended, as Paul detailed Meadfleet’s ethos with regard to adopting a biodiversity-led approach to the management of green spaces on housing developments. Paul explained the planning process, the role of management companies, planning legislation, the implementation of Biodiversity Net Gain, and what should be expected from green space management. The talk then focussed on some of the work undertaken to maintain the varying landscapes including formal and recreational areas alongside wildlife habitats, to maximise biodiversity value and provide all customers with access to nature. Photos and footage of wildflower meadows, great crested newts, badgers, foxes, otters and even a beaver, all taken on Meadfleet developments, added some extra interest to the talk.
The talk ended with some probing questions from the audience on a variety of wildlife topics.
We became aware of Royston Wildlife Group through litterpicking events held by Meadfleet with the Friends of Therfield Heath. Therfield Heath is a Local Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest with a mosaic of habitats include woodlands and chalk grasslands. We were asked to lead a wildlife walk on the heath in summer 2025, and then followed this up with the talk at the town hall.
Meadfleet development Ivy Farm lies very close to Therfield Heath, and we look forward to working with local groups in the future to further our good relationship with the local community.
