We have been very busy lately preparing and planning our planting for Year 2 of Buzz and Flutter, Meadfleet’s campaign to provide enhancements across our public open spaces to boost biodiversity and help our customers to get closer to nature.
All of the enhancements are provided by Meadfleet at no cost to our customers. As owners and managers of extensive areas of greenspace we feel a responsibility to manage our land to benefit native wildlife, and to encourage our customers to get involved by offering donations to help them create their own wildlife haven in their garden. It is not just wildlife that will benefit – all of our planting schemes are carefully selected to look fantastic so that people can be proud of their local areas of open space.
In 2025 we commemorated 30 years since Meadfleet first started operating, and to celebrate we decided to plant 30 oak trees – not just in 2025, but for the next five years. We are selecting appropriate locations where the trees will be able to thrive for generations to come. Pedunculate or English oaks, Quercus robur, are iconic native trees which typify the British landscape and are wonderful for wildlife – they are known to support over 2300 different species of UK wildlife. We have already planted 30 trees in early 2025 and will be planting a further 30 this winter.
We are also committing to planting 5km of new native species-rich hedgerow. Earlier this year we planted new sections of hedge to cover 1km, and will be planting a further 1km this winter. We are selecting locations where the hedges can establish and form valuable features to support wildlife such as nesting and foraging birds, but also to connect existing habitats across the landscape, acting as wildlife corridors.
This year we will be creating 3600m2 of wildflower meadows. We have identified areas of our developments where areas currently managed as mown grass can be transformed into wildlife meadows, providing a blaze of colour, and a wonderful source of nectar for pollinating insects.
To provide more stunning blooms and to benefit wildlife throughout the spring we are also planting flowering bulbs. This autumn we are planting crocus and iris – crocus are one of the earliest bulbs to flower and will create a beautiful carpet of colour on our lawns, whist taller irises will flower in late spring and early summer to provide structure and colour to shrub beds – both species will provide pollen and nectar to benefit bees, butterflies, hoverflies and other pollinators.
As well as enhancements to public open spaces we are helping our customers to attract wildlife to their gardens by donating bird feeders and seed. So far this year we have donated over 500 feeders, to help hungry birds throughout the winter months.
We now wait excitedly for the new flowers to bloom and habitats to establish, to see our native wildlife benefit from these new features, and to share these benefits with our customers.
