We’re excited to announce that Meadfleet is now a proud corporate member of Butterfly Conservation, a UK charity dedicated to protecting butterflies, moths, and the habitats they rely on. As part of our Buzz and Flutter campaign, this new partnership strengthens our commitment to creating thriving habitats for wildlife across our open spaces and beyond.
Building on the success of our Bee Friendly Campaign, we are continuing to provide food sources and habitat for bees, while expanding our focus to support a broader range of wildlife – including birds and butterflies.
Butterflies and moths are important pollinators that contribute to the reproduction of many flowering plants. Alongside bees and other insects, they help maintain plant diversity and support healthy ecosystems. They are also key indicators of environmental change, with their populations often reflecting shifts in habitat quality and climate conditions.
By partnering with Butterfly Conservation, we’re supporting an organisation at the forefront of wildlife conservation – restoring habitats, protecting declining species, and engaging communities in biodiversity efforts.
Through our Buzz and Flutter campaign, we are enhancing habitats that benefit pollinators like butterflies and moths, as well as their caterpillars. Our key targets include:
- Planting 150 oak trees across our open spaces – Oak trees support a wide range of insect life, including many moth species whose caterpillars feed on their leaves. They also contribute to long-term habitat structure and stability.
- Creating 1 sqm of wildflower planting for every home on a Meadfleet development – Wildflowers provide vital nectar for adult butterflies and moths, and many native species act as host plants for eggs and caterpillars.
- Planting 100,000 flowering bulbs – A mix of bulbs blooming throughout the year ensures a continuous nectar supply, supporting both early and late-season pollinators.
- Adding 5 km of hedgerow – Native hedgerows offer shelter, larval food plants, and flight corridors that connect fragmented habitats and support breeding populations.
Together, these measures contribute to more resilient ecosystems and help support butterfly and moth populations throughout their life cycles – from caterpillar to adult – across our open spaces.
