Recently, we had the opportunity to visit Codicote Primary School, to help create a wildflower meadow on their school grounds. In April, our ecology team visited the school to lead an assembly on the importance of wildflower meadows and how they support local wildlife. We were very excited to return and work with the children to create this habitat for them to witness all they had learnt first-hand. Â
With support from Arborcare Tree Surgery & Landscape Management, who prepared the ground, and wildflower seeds donated by Meadfleet, we joined the school’s eco-team to start sowing the seeds and carefully raking them over to ensure they were safely deposited into the soil.
Wildflower meadows are vital ecosystems that support a rich diversity of wildlife. The nectar from the wildflowers provides an essential food source for pollinators such as bees and butterflies. In turn, these pollinators play a crucial role in sustaining other wildlife, including birds and small mammals. The dense vegetation offers shelter and safe breeding sites for small mammals and a variety of invertebrates. Once the flowers have died back, their seed heads become an important food source for many bird species.
This project gave the children an opportunity for hands-on outdoor learning while fostering a deeper appreciation for nature. We are looking forward to watching the meadow grow and attract wildlife over time, with the children enjoying the colourful results of their hard work!
