Meadfleet Wins Biodiversity and Nature Award
We are incredibly proud to share that Meadfleet has won the Biodiversity and Nature Award at the Unlock Net Zero Awards 2026, in recognition of our biodiversity-led approach to open space management.
The awards celebrate organisations and initiatives that are making a positive contribution towards achieving net zero and creating more sustainable communities. The Biodiversity and Nature category featured eight exceptional finalists, all delivering inspiring projects to support nature recovery and environmental enhancement. To be recognised as the winner among such strong competition was both a delight and a genuine surprise.
Putting Nature at the Heart of Open Space Management
At Meadfleet, we believe that open spaces should deliver far more than simply amenity value. Well-managed green spaces can play a vital role in supporting biodiversity, helping communities connect with nature and creating places that people are proud to call home.
Across the more than 545 acres of public open space we manage on over 350 residential developments throughout England and Wales, we are committed to creating and enhancing habitats that deliver lasting benefits for wildlife and residents alike.
Our award-winning approach recognises that biodiversity enhancement should not be treated as an optional extra. Instead, it should be embedded within the long-term management of residential developments, ensuring that open spaces continue to evolve and provide environmental benefits long after the homes themselves have been built.
Buzz & Flutter – Creating Habitats That Matter
A key part of our approach is our Buzz & Flutter biodiversity programme, which builds on the success of our previous Bee Friendly campaign.
The programme is designed to deliver measurable nature recovery by creating and strengthening habitats for pollinators, birds and wider wildlife across our portfolio of developments.
Through initiatives including:
- Planting native trees and hedgerows
- Creating species-rich wildflower areas
- Establishing pollen-rich bulb displays
- Installing bird feeders and other wildlife features
- Delivering ecology-led events and educational activities
We are helping to create more resilient and connected habitats that support nature recovery at scale.
These initiatives also contribute to wider environmental goals by improving soil health, increasing nectar availability, enhancing habitat connectivity and supporting climate adaptation.
Engaging Communities Along the Way
What makes this recognition particularly special is that it celebrates not only the habitats we are creating, but also the way we engage local communities in the process.
We firmly believe that successful biodiversity enhancement relies on people as much as places.
Through community events, school activities, competitions, resident communications and practical opportunities to get involved, we actively encourage residents to connect with and care for the natural environment around them.
Whether it is taking part in No Mow May, planting wildflowers, learning about pollinators or attending one of our ecology events, residents play an important role in helping us create thriving, nature-rich communities.
A Team Effort
This award is a testament to the hard work, passion and commitment of colleagues across the business. From our Operations team delivering habitat enhancements on the ground to our community engagement activities and partnerships with wildlife organisations, every part of Meadfleet has contributed to this achievement.
We would also like to thank our partners, contractors and the residents who continue to embrace and support our biodiversity initiatives.
Looking Ahead
Winning the Biodiversity and Nature Award is an incredible honour, but it also strengthens our determination to do even more.
As we continue to expand our Buzz & Flutter programme and enhance the open spaces under our care, we remain committed to demonstrating that long-term open space management can make a real and measurable difference for both people and nature.
Together, we can create greener, healthier and more biodiverse communities for future generations.
