We recently held a Minibeast Hunt event at a Meadfleet development near Halifax. An amazing turnout of 68 people joined us to search for and identify a variety of insects, spiders and other critters. The event was organised with the Fountainhead Village Residents’ Association, who planned refreshments and entertainment for the local community.
The sunny weather encouraged lots of keen bug explorers to join us at the event, and ensured that insects and other invertebrates were active. Armed with nets, pooters (tubes for sucking insects safely into a container) and ID sheets everybody set out to find as many creepie crawlies as they could. The most common catch on the day were leaf hoppers, but we also saw a number of butterflies, spiders and other invertebrates. We explored a mosaic of habitats including long grass, wildflowers, scrub and trees.
All of the children (and most of the adults not traumatised by spiders) left with a huge smile on their faces, and a Meadfleet goody bag full of items to help them learn even more about creepie-crawlies.

Our Ecology Team love to help our customers, schools and community groups to learn more about the nature and wildlife in their local area, and we are always looking for new groups to work with – please visit our Community page for more information.
