Making a Difference on Your Doorstep

At Meadfleet, we believe that well-managed open spaces should do more than look attractive – they should bring communities together. That’s why we regularly support and organise activities that encourage residents to enjoy, learn about and care for the green spaces on their doorstep.
Here are just a couple of examples:

Building a Bug Hotel at Kings Acre

Residents at our Kings Acre development in West Sussex came together to create a large bug hotel with support from our Development Manager, Daniel.

The event proved particularly popular with younger residents, who enthusiastically helped build the habitat and learned how it will provide a home for insects and other small creatures. Meadfleet was delighted to supply materials, gifts for the children taking part and a bespoke sign for the new bug hotel!

Creating habitats such as these is a simple but effective way of boosting biodiversity while giving residents a real sense of ownership and pride in their open spaces.

Discovering the Benefits of No Mow May

In partnership with housebuilder Strata, we were delighted to host a community event at the Definition development in Derby, celebrating the benefits of No Mow May.

The event gave residents the opportunity to discover how allowing selected grassland areas to grow naturally creates valuable habitat for wildlife. Longer grass supports a wide range of wildflowers, providing nectar for bees and butterflies, while also offering shelter and breeding habitat for insects, birds and small mammals.

Our Ecology and Conservation Manager led a guided wildlife walk, comparing traditionally mown grass with No Mow May areas and highlighting the remarkable variety of wildflowers that had emerged. Residents also took part in a minibeast hunt and pond dipping session, discovering butterflies, bees, damselflies and many other fascinating species living within their local green spaces.

To help continue the wildlife theme at home, every attendee received a nature-themed goodie bag, including wildflower seeds and activities to encourage wildlife-friendly gardening.

Events like these help residents understand the purpose behind our biodiversity initiatives, creating greater appreciation for the open spaces around them while inspiring simple actions that can make a real difference for nature.
